Perform this every day throughout Pitra Paksha, ideally before 10 AM. Tarpan is the simplest and most essential offering - a stream of water carrying your love, your memory, and your intent to the souls of your ancestors.
Step 1: Purification - Bathe and wear clean clothes. Light the diya and incense at your altar.
Step 2: Sankalp - Hold water in your cupped right hand. Declare your name, your ancestor's name, and your intention aloud. This declaration is not optional - it binds the offering to your specific lineage.
Step 3: Tarpan Mantra - Fill your copper lota with clean water. Add a pinch of black sesame seeds (kala til), a few barley grains, and a white flower petal. Wear the Kusha grass ring on your right ring finger. Facing south, pour water while reciting: "OM [ancestor's name] [gotra] gotrasya truptim prayaccha svaha." Repeat 3 times per ancestor. The Kusha ring should remain visible as the water flows.
Recite this 11 times each morning during Pitra Paksha as the opening invocation for your ancestors.
The guide contains 5 complete mantras with Sanskrit, transliteration, and meaning - including the Tarpan Mantra, Pind Daan Mantra, Pitru Stotram, and the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for liberating souls in difficult states. Each mantra includes guidance on when and how many times to recite it.
Each of the 16 days corresponds to a lunar date (tithi). Perform your main Shraddh on the tithi matching your ancestor's death date. If unknown, perform on the final day - Sarva Pitru Amavasya - which covers all ancestors.
Key special days:
